BMW S54 Vanos Problems and Repairs

BMW S54 Vanos Problems and Repairs

The E46 M3 beauty is truly timeless and arguably the best BMW M3 ever made. The S54 high revving engine redlines at 8,000 rpm producing 343hp without the aid of forced induction. Although the S54 is a well engineered engine, it does have some flaws and Vanos is top of the list. There are several possible Vanos failures and this applies to Z3 Z4 M models equipped with S54B32 engines. Camshaft Sprocket Bolts The fillister head screws that goes on the camshaft sprockets will get loose over time allowing the bolt to puncture a hole through the block or valve cover. The sheared bolts can also cause the timing chain to skip and snap resulting in permanent engine damage. The cam gear bolts have been updated by BMW to prevent this catastrophic failure and we suggest having the bolts upgraded during your Inspection II service. Cam Gear Bolts Exhaust Camshaft Hub and Vanos Oil Pump The exhaust hub contains two tab ... read more

BMW Transmission Service & Fluid Change

BMW Transmission Service & Fluid Change

BMW transmissions are susceptible to wear and failures. Proper maintenance ahead of time can avoid more costly repairs. We have a BMW 650i with a transmission failsafe message and exhibiting symptoms such as car doesn't go into gear, gear disengages and shifts into neutral while driving and rough downshift. The transmission will enter a failsafe mode, also known as limp-home mode, when the EGS module senses a fault or missing input for proper operation. This can be caused by mechanical wear such as worn clutches, communication problems, low fluid and more. After retrieving the fault codes from the EGS module, we'll remove the transmission pan to inspect for wear. Mechatronics Sealing Sleeve Failure This E63 6 series is equipped with a 6HP ZF transmission. Upon inspection we've found a worn mechatronic seal on the valve body causing low fluid pressure which will prevent the transmission gears to engage and triggering fault code such as 507D Park ... read more

Audi VW 2.0T TSI Timing Chain Tensioner Failure

Audi VW 2.0T TSI Timing Chain Tensioner Failure

A rattling noise from the timing cover, all engine cylinders misfiring, car died and won't restart or extended engine cranking time are all symptoms of a failed timing chain tensioner. This particularly applies to Volkswagen Audi 2.0 TSI engines from 2008-2013 with engine code CCTA, CBFA, CAEB and CPMA which comes with the inferior chain tensioner. We now dive in by removing the front nose of the car and have the timing covers removed. The TSI timing chain tensioner has been updated several times due to their failure rate. The tensioner in question is highlighted in purple. When this component fails, it applies less tension causing the timing chain to get loose and rattle. Once the timing chain jumps timing, being that this is an "interference engine", it can lead to catastrophic engine failure as the internal engine components collide against each other, e.g. intake or exhaust valve making contact against the piston. To avoid a costly engine failur ... read more

Mysterious Coolant Leak Mini Cooper S

Mysterious Coolant Leak Mini Cooper S

The owner of this R53 Mini cooper attempted to find the coolant leak on his car after having to repeatedly top-off the coolant and replacing the thermostat and gasket. We’ve identified the leak to be coming from the water pump weep hole. This W11 engine is equipped with a supercharger where the water pump is mounted onto, a tedious location to get to. We’ve dismantled the front nose of the car to gain access to the water pump. After the water pump is installed, we’ll be flushing out the wrong coolant the customer has been adding with BMW anti-corrosive coolant, formulated to properly protect the engine internals of a MINI Cooper. This MINI is fully reassembled and ready to hit the road
